Scotland Sundays: London Road Gardens, Edinburgh

It's been some time since I've done a Scotland Sundays post.  Today, I wanted to highlight one of my favourite places in Edinburgh; London Road Gardens.  Right in the middle of town, this park is an oasis.  It features lovely tree-lined paths and lots of greenery.

For this particular stroll in the gardens, I wore my 'First Crepe of Summer' dress (McCall 3908 from my 1940 McCall Project).   I topped it off with a lovely late 1930's black hat with a striking red feather that I bought from Adeline's Attic Vintage (also known as the lovely Vintage Baroness):

The London Road Gardens has some of the most beautiful trees I've ever seen!  It would be the perfect place for a summer picnic.

Right in the middle of the gardens, there is an adorable, recently opened, little restaurant called 'The Gardener's Cottage' which serves up local and seasonal food.  It's also a social dining venue meaning that a six course set menu for dinner is served up on one long communal dining table.  You can also order a la carte and they serve weekend brunch.  I definitely want to check it out one of these weekends!!

Within the gardens there is an upper path and a lower path.  The lower path runs parallel to London Road but the upper path heads up towards the Royal Terrace and Calton Hill area.

The garden is lovely in the summer sunshine with the sun streaming through the gaps in the trees.

Here's another close-up of the dress and hat. I just love how they go together!

Sometimes it's the small gardens and hidden-away paths that are the most rewarding in urban spaces. Do you have local gardens or walking paths that you visit regularly?

  1. How lovely! We like to walk across Central Park on Sundays after church, and it's such a nice escape from the city streets (although it's always filled with people, too). A few weeks ago we ran across a mother duck herding her six little ones-- what a sight! I love that city planners long ago thought to leave us pockets of green in the midst of urban environments.

  2. Ah, Central Park--what a lovely place! My favourite thing about Central Park is that there are so many hidden pockets/areas to explore. I love that you saw a mama duck with her ducklings! How adorable!!

  4. Lovely outfit, your hat just finishes it off. I live very near a canal which is one of my favourite places to walk, lots of greenery, ducks, geese and herons and very peaceful.

  5. Lovely outfit the colour against the trees is stunning ... I think red and green are complementary colours and you couldn't have picked a more stunning background.

  9. So so pretty Debi! I hope we have time to visit the garden when we are in Edinburgh, perhaps dinner at the restaurant is required! Also, if you could arrange the weather to be sunny as well that would be great :)

  10. Wow, that first photo of you is absolutely stunning! Looks like you had a lovely day :-)

I love urban oases like these. Many many years ago I lived in Seoul and one of the only things that made my time there bearable were the beautiful parks and palace grounds (of which there are many, thankfully :-)) It amazed me that in such an enormous city that I could always manage to find a little spot to be alone for a while. Food for the soul :-)

  14. Gorgeous dress. You look like a character from a WWII drama! I usually use organic fabrics to make my dresses from www.organiccottonplus.com. Can you share your sources?
