1940 Pinafore Inspiration: Part 1

I wanted to share some of my inspiration photos for pinafores from the 1940 August edition of American Vogue magazine:

This is the college edition of the magazine and I find the fashions absolutely charming!

I think these two photos are of the same pinafore?  I love the bike too!

I think this is one of my favorite photos has everything I love: plaid skirts, plaid suits, sweaters, pinafores...
Apparently the pinafore in this photo is made of dark green velveteen! How lovely!!

Hope you are all having a lovely Saturday!

  1. I adore 40s and 50s college fashion! Thanks for the post!

  2. These are lovely pictures, I may have to go look for a pinafore on Etsy right now!

  3. Ooooh... one of velveteen would be nice for winter... or a wide-wale cord. Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Ooh, I love the last one. SO much inspiration just in one photo!

  5. YES! i love this post. 'vintage pinafore' is a much-beloved search term whenever im looking around on etsy!

  6. Oh, I love these. I actually have a 40s "jumper" (skirt with suspenders) coming the shop some time in the near future. Just a fabulous vintage garment!

  7. Love the pinafore and all that plaid!

  8. did you know the girl in the knee high stockings with plaid skirt is Barbara Bush sister Martha !!!! I had stumbled upon a description of her in Barbara's auto bio, claiming that she was a beauty and she had possed on the August 1940 cover of Vogue. when I search for the picture this was it her sitting in front of a bicycle

I read each and every comment--thank you so much!
